Liffey Descent September 2011
Venue: Liffey River, Ireland
Date: 10 September 2011
Distance: 18 miles (28 K)
The Liffey Decent Canoe Race is an annual canoe and kayak race that takes place on the River Liffey. It starts at the K Club above Straffan Weir, Co. Kildare and about 18 miles later finishes at Trinity Rowing Club in Dublin. There are a total of 10 weirs between the start and the finish. Founded in 1960 and is organised by the Irish canoe Club.
Each year canoeists gather from all over Europe to challenge the Liffey as it clambers its way over ten weirs and numerous rapids, not to mention a long portage around Leixlip dam and a heavily wooded section - 18 miles in all - making it a supreme test of canoeing skill, stamina courage and ability.
The race began in 1960 as an inter-club event, but developed rapidly, becoming an international event by 1964 and it now attracts paddlers from many parts of the world.
It starts by the K Club above Straffan weir in County Kildare, and finishes by the Trinity Rowing Club in Dublin. It is organised by the Irish Canoe Union and is normally timed to coincide with The Liffey Swim. 2011 will see the 52nd anniversary of this event.
