ORM Surgical Programme

Our surgical programme goes hand in hand with our medical Horrific living and medical conditionsprogramme. While we facilitate, finance and provide the post operative care, our medical team does not operate on these very brave children. We transfer them to the appropriate surgical care facility for all operations. All children are accompanied by an individual carer for the duration of their inpatient stay. On discharge, we provide the necessary medical post operative care.

Surgeries provided by ORM can be broken into two categories depending on the need;

  • Planned/elective surgery
  • Emergency surgery

Examples of surgeries provided by ORM include, 5 open heart operations to repair congenital hAbandoned children under good medical supervisioneart defects, 7 intercranial surgeries (brain) to place shunts to drain excess fluid around the brain (hydrocephalus), 3 intra-abdominal surgeries for intestinal blockage, 7 appendectomy surgeries, 10 ENT surgeries including cleft lip and pallet repair.

Other surgery sponsored by ORM includes elective orthopaedic intervention as part of our rehabilitation programme. Examples of these surgeries include wheelchair bound children who had been born with lower limb defects and those that had become immobile due to their condition and had developed contractures due to no earlier interventions etc.  61 children have undergone multi-step operations as part of this rehabilitation programme to regain mobility, this is then linked into our post operative physiotherapy programme to provide the gift of independence.

The efforts of these children post operatively is something that has to be seen to be believed, they push themselves to the limits of their strength as they undergo their daily demanding physiotherapy routine. 17 of the 61 children who underwent orthopaedic intervention now walk independently without support, the remaining children walk with the support of a walking aid or assisted by a carer. To watch a child take their first hesitant steps after a long road is not something anyone forgets, the utter joy of achievement is bigger than any lottery.

If you would like any further information on our surgical programmes, or how you can get involved by sponsoring a child to undergo a life changing operation, please do not hesitate to contact us or give us a call on 01 2827100
