When ORM started in 2001, our emphasis was on health. The children were so sick that before anything could be done to improve their social situation, their medical health must be addressed first. 

With the very kind assistance of PSF, we employed 3 temporary medical doctors to attend to the day to day medical issues that were arising, while we went on a fact finding mission to establish what was available in terms of acute medical facilities and medical staff. It became very clear early on that the local services available at that time were not nearly sufficient for our needs. The hospital had no running water, no heating and no paediatric facilities. They were already at crisis point themselves and could not accommodate the level of care the children we were working with needed. 

We approached the specialist paediatric and adult hospitals in Chisinau (the capital) and recruited specialist staff and permission to treat the children and young adults in their facilities. With their help and ongoing partnership we were able to change the future for these very brave children.

Today we have a permanent medical staff that includes:

  • Medical Director specialised in Rehabilitation Medicine
  • 16 full time specialist doctors
  • 5 night doctors
  • 1 intensive care specialist
  • 1 dentist & dental nurse
  • Part time consultant doctors in the following areas of medicine and surgery: paediatrics, neurology, psychiatry, endocrinology, hepatology, ENT, genetics, gynaecology, orthopaedics, dermatology, cardiology, respiratory, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, general surgery, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, etc
  • 4 full time Specialist nurses
  • 13 full time RGNs
  • 13 full time Staff nurses
  • 1 Full time biochemist
  • 5 full time Physiotherapists
  • 2 full time Speech Therapists
  • 2 full time Psychologists

We also accept applications from university students within the Departments of Health Sciences in Ireland and can offer them overseas elective positions in collaboration with ORM and our partner hospitals. For more information read more...
